An opportunity currently exists for a Transmission Lines Engineer in the Engineering Standards & Support (ESS) team within AltaLink’s Asset Management department. The Transmission Lines Engineer will work collaboratively with Civil Engineering colleagues to provide support for ESS’s accountabilities in the area of Transmission Lines. This includes governance of AltaLink’s Engineering Standards Process as well as providing engineering support to internal teams who work with engineering standards, are involved in procurement activities, or who need subject matter expertise in the Transmission Lines disciplines. The Transmission Lines Engineer will report to the Manager, Engineering Standards & Support and have the responsibilities listed below.

Responsibilities

  • Ongoing update and maintenance of the Transmission Line content of AltaLink’s Material Item Catalogue (MIC). This involves developing strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders of the material and equipment supply chain.
  • Work collaboratively with external suppliers as part of manufacturer qualification, material & equipment innovation or obsolescence, and to work through quality issues.
  • Support the development and revision of engineering standards, material specifications, and standard drawings. This includes keeping up to date on applicable codes, regulations, and industry standards.
  • Provide technical support to AltaLink’s project, procurement, and operations teams who use Transmission Lines engineering standards or who need support for deviation to standards requests.
  • Collaborate with other discipline colleagues in the ESS team to provide support, governance, and continuous improvement of AltaLink’s “Engineering Standards Process”, “Technical Qualification Process”, and “Deviation to Standards Process”
  • Help identify and establish appropriate sparing and emergency inventory levels for Transmission Line assets
  • Work collaboratively with the Principal Engineer, Transmission Lines in the advancement of AltaLink’s Strategic Technology Roadmap

  • Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical or Civil Engineering
  • Professional member or qualifies for registration as an Engineer In Training with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)
  • Proven ability/experience in the above noted responsibilities
  • Demonstrated understanding of codes and materials used for transmission line construction, construction techniques and line maintenance for voltages of 69kV and above would be an asset
  • Experience with material management or supply chain processes would be preferred
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills with an ability to work in a team environment
  • Must have strong analytical and problem solving skills and be able to manage multiple competing priorities
  • Strong networking skills for the purpose of building internal and external business relationships
  • Strong attention to detail
