An opportunity currently exists for the position of a Senior Electrical Effects Engineer within the Power Quality & Electrical Effects team, in the Asset Management department. This position will be located in Calgary, and there will be some travel required within AltaLink's service territory.
This role requires an experienced and confident Engineer, who under the leadership and direction of AltaLink’s Manager of Power Quality and Electrical Effects, is accountable to help manage issues and concerns related to the operation of AltaLink’s existing facilities and addition of new facilities, specifically in the areas of electric and magnetic fields (EMF) and related electrical effects (EE).
Participate in discussions with internal staff and external stakeholders who have concerns or questions on EMF and EE related to the operation of AltaLink’s existing facilities and proposed facility additions. Some travel within AltaLink's service territory will be required.
Lead the documentation and management of issues related to EMF and EE associated with AltaLink’s operating facilities and proposed facility additions.
Conduct field measurements and perform analyses using computer models and databases employed by AltaLink, related to EMF and EE.
Assess AltaLink’s facility operation against applicable standards and guidelines, analyze options and propose appropriate solutions in managing issues and concerns specific to EMF and EE.
Assist in the design of project-specific EMF and EE materials including regulatory documents, and participate in Open Houses and stakeholder meetings associated with proposed transmission developments.
When required, provide project-specific and general testimony at regulatory hearings on AltaLink’s activities related to EMF and EE and how they relate to applicable research and science.
Update EMF and EE position summaries, key messages, frequently asked questions (FAQ) and other related documents.
Utilize external consultants when additional technical advice or field measurements are required.
Must have a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, and be a Professional member of APEGA or other provincial engineering association. Additional training (M. Eng., MBA, PhD) would be an asset.
Minimum of ten years experience with power systems, transmission engineering, scientific research or other related area is required. Previous experience related to regulated electric utilities is preferred.
Proven ability/experience in the above noted responsibilities.
Must have strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships, and must be a strong team player.
Must have demonstrated ability to make sound judgments with respect to the appropriate behaviour in given situations.
Must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills and be able to manage multiple competing priorities.
Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills with the English language, including strong reporting, presentation and public speaking skills.
Previous experience as a witness is preferred.
Formal training, experience and knowledge of power system operation and measurement techniques are preferred.
Knowledge of applicable standards such as CSA, IEC and IEEE would be an asset.
Must have a valid driver’s license as travel will be required.
Proven track record of good attendance.
